Enhancing Collaborative Knowledge Exchange Through Expert Visits – CMMI and FER

As an integral part of our ongoing project, expert visits are strategically planned to facilitate knowledge exchange through a series of lectures and tutorials. These sessions aim to address the Science and Technology (S&T) areas within the five sectors and emphasize ocean literacy.

Scope and Expectations: A total of 26 expert visits, focusing on Science and Technology, and 19 visits dedicated to ocean literacy, are anticipated throughout the duration of the project. These engagements are designed to cover a wide range of topics, fostering theoretical understanding and hands-on skills transfer.

Expert Visits: CMMI and FER

The first two expert visits set the stage for collaborative endeavors between the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) and the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER).

Visit 1: CMMI Expert to FER – January 8-10, 2024:  CMMI expert, visited FER from January 8 to 10, 2024, delivering insightful lectures on:

  1. Advances in Cypriot Marine Robotics and Maritime Digitalization: The expert elaborated on the significant progress made by CMMI in marine robotics and digitalization, encompassing achievements and ongoing work.
  2. Introduction on Use of Robotic Platforms: This session provided insights into the utilization of robotic platforms, emphasizing their role in marine applications.
  3. Training on Use of Robotic Platforms: Attendees received hands-on training on the functionality of CMMI’s robotic platforms, including integration with the Internet of Things (IoT) and computer vision systems.

Visit 2: FER Expert to CMMI – January 23-26, 2024: A reciprocal visit occurred from January 23 to 26, 2024, where an expert from FER delivered a compelling lecture:

  1. Complete Coverage of Large Seabed Areas Using Sonar Data-Based Path Planning: The expert shared groundbreaking research on efficient mapping of unknown large-scale marine areas using side-scan sonar onboard autonomous marine vehicles. The presentation highlighted innovative online sonar-data driven coverage path planning algorithms, offering advantages over traditional static coverage solutions.

SeaTecHub is looking forward to further enriching the collective expertise through future expert visits, contributing to the advancement of the sustainable development of the blue economy.
